Fossil Rim Wildlife Center

by Permanent Posies on May 25, 2011

My oldest granddaughter turned 5 this week!  So, we took her and her little sister to Fossil Rim for a little animal action.  Her mom made this cute little birthday shirt for her.  You can buy her creations at

Fossil Rim is an awesome drive through animal park and great fun for the kids.  Well, great fun for los adultos too.  The park sells animal pellets and the rule is that you can only feed the giraffes from your hands.   The rest, drop it on the ground in front of them.  Yea?  Was that a rule?  Didn’t you hear?  Rules are made to be broken (as taught by my mom….well, and my dad, for that matter).  The other rule is that you can’t get out of your car.  I coerced my daughter to get out and take a picture…..against her will (cause she is a rule follower) and a park official just happened to drive by.  Hmmmmm……Ok….so, we won’t break that rule again….ha.  I am a terrible mom!

Now if you live in Texas and ever decide to make a trip to Fossil Rim, make sure you go first thing in the morning when it opens.  By the afternoon, many are not still interested in pellets, when they are surrounded by grass and it is too hot to get up.  But in the morning, some of them literally run to the cars.

Also, it gets crowded the later it gets and particularly on the weekends.  We went on a Tuesday and it the perfect time and day of the week.  The kids love not sitting in a car seat and bounce back and forth, from window to window.

Make sure you take Wet Wipes cause the giraffes slober.

We saw lots of little babies.

Ostriches freak me out so….windows up!  This one kept trying to peck at something on the dash of my car.  She kept hitting the windshield but apparently, they don’t have the largest brain.

So, they won’t let you anywhere near the rhinos.  That is one rule I will follow.

F is for Fossil Rim at Alphabet Thursday.  Check out the other “F” posts.

What a wonderful adventure for them! One of my boys got licked by a giraffe at the zoo once.  It is very messy!  But still fun!

Looks like a GREAT birthday outing……….better than Chucky Cheese! And I do remember the slobering giraffe’s giving you a “bath” when Bella was here! Gross!!!

So much fun!  I noticed the same thing at our local zoo.  The Australian exhibit is wild in the morning, and by afternoon, everyone is lazy and lounging!  Great F post.

Sounds like you had a fun trip on Fossil Rim!  I would have kept my windows up for the ostrich, too!

We have gone on a farm tour in a wagon pulled by a tractor. I don’t think I would want animal drool all over my car.

I am not sure why I didn’t see this earlier but….you must live close to me. I actually bought a season pass this year because a one time visit costs so much and I could go twice and pay for it. I love to take my grandkids. It is too hot right now…..102 today!
