Unabridged Audio Books

Drop Down Deals

My husband and I get into our cars and the the first thing we do is to turn on an audio book.  We live about 20-25 minutes from town so, the smallest errands require drive time.  Sometimes I spend that time making plans or praying and my husband likes to listen to music.  But I have found, that I seem to get there faster if I am transported to another place and time.

The latest series of books we have been “reading” in the car has been the Clan of the Cave Bear series.  I read these years ago but our Public Library is lacking in quantity/quality so, why not?

I remembered that the first book was fantastic and the book leaves you hanging and wondering.  So, you must read the second to find out how the heroine, Ayla, copes with her situation.

But by book number 5, the author spends most of her time reiterating the things that happened in the previous books, interspersing the new adventures with a very exhausting and superhuman sex life, description of vegetation and repetitive introductions between the main characters and those they meet while traveling.  I guess she hoped these books would stand alone and put her exhaustive effort into accomplishing that rather then being true to her established fan base.  She offers just enough new stuff to keep us coming back.

By the way, it is way different reading about someone having sex than listening to them have sex. I am not meaning that I read this sort of things often.  It is just that some of these books throw that in the mix unnecessarily.   The good thing is that I can just push fast forward.  I mean really?  It was perfectly heavenly and transporting to some ethereal place of bliss EVERY SINGLE TIME.  Whatever!  I would not be nearly as annoyed if only her heroine would just say, “Sorry….have a headache…not in the mood….too anxious…..too sleep deprived……unhappy…..mad at you…we are sleeping on an ice glacier!”…..ANYTHING realistic.

My husband sort of liked the erotica the first few times he heard them but after awhile, superhuman caveman love just annoyed him too.  Not that these books are designed for erotica.  They are awesomely creative works of fiction depicting completely made up cultures and people that lived eons ago. Ms. Auel gets points for that.  But unlike the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon (by far, my favorite books), this author’s view of sex does not seem to be grounded in reality.  No bad breath here.   Or maybe I am just more attracted to Jaime than Jondular.  In fact, everyone I know that reads of the exciting time traveling adventures of Jaime and Claire in Outlander is lusting after the main character….and that includes my mom and my daughters…. (lalala).

Well, Jean M. Auel is coming out with Book 6 in the long awaited finale to the Clan of the Cave Bear and I am, for one, ready to be done with it.  Unfortunately, I read a review about it and I am not looking forward to all the repetition, though, you better believe that I will be reading it.  I am, after all, a very loyal friend and fan of Ayla and Jondular…..even though I do fast forward a lot.

If you have not tried to listen to a book on CD, just head down to the library and pick one out.  We are really drawn to certain readers and our favorite…or the People’s Choice Award from us….goes to Will Patton.  He reads for James Lee Burke and for Larry McMurtry and makes a book come alive.  When your mind wonders, just push rewind.  If you don’t want to listen to something, just push fast forward.  Simple as that!

This is my U post for Alphabet Thursday…..for what it is worth.

Great post! One of our daughters is visiting from New Orleans. Rod flew there and drove here with her and my three granddogs. They rented classics to listen to on the trip. Rod said that To Kill A Mockingbird was just wonderful. It is read by Sissy Spacek. We love listening to books on cd when we are traveling!!

Finally…someone has the cajones to admit what I’d been thinking all along! But that won’t stop me from reading the next book. Sigh.

I have read her books and I agree, but again I will read the last one also…

Gotta find out how it all ends!

I have only watched the movie but do not think I want to listen to the books. But I am a HUGE FAN of audio books. I ALWAYS have one going in my car and I am such a fan of the public library because they are FREE. I have listened to so many wonderful stories and they come to life with the talented readers. I can’t wait to start Outlander series, thanks for the tip!

I tried and tried to like those books and just couldn’t make it happen. Maybe if I’d tried an audio book……….

Ms. Auel’s books are too risque for me, but we LOVE audio books for trips. Our old standby’s are the Chronicles of Narnia Radio Theatre series from Focus on the Family. They are perfect for both young and old…and rated G.

I love audio books! The drive from our house to visit my husband’s family is about 6 hours. We don’t travel as much as we used to, but the audio books certainly speed along the time.
